In 1937, Bro. R.N. Hogan was invited to a Los Angeles, California and conducted a Gospel meeting. There were 44 baptisms and the congregation at 11th Street and Wilmington Avenue was established. Hogan returned to Los Angeles in 1938 for another meeting and 4 more people were baptized, and another congregation was established in a storefront at 48th Street and Compton Avenue. Bro. Hogan became the minister of the new congregation, and the beginning was what later became the Figueroa Church of Christ.

Under Brother Hogan's competent leadership, the new congregation grew rapidly. In 1945, a church building was purchased for $10,000, at 43rd Street and the McKinley Avenue facility was no longer adequate. The Figueroa Church of Christ building at 57th and Figueroa street was purchased for $150,000, the current location of the congregation.

In 1966, another expansion program was initiated to include a new auditorium to seat over 1500 people. 15 new additional classrooms, 40 classes and office space. The new edifice was dedicated in March, 1968. Bro. Hogan provided the construction, as well as designed the interior of a considerable savings to the Church.

Subsequent properties have been purchased and new facilities and programs have been added, including new classrooms, offices, bus ministry, clothing and food center for the needy, recreational facilities, new building for Christian Echo, fellowship center and the Los Angeles Bible College.

Under Bro. Hogan's leadership, the Figueroa congregation has continued to grow with membership and ordained elders and deacons.

The congregation has many plans for future growth and expansion. A 66 room Senior Housing Facility was dedicated March 29, 1998 it remains filled and is serving the community well. The congregation complete construction on a brand new Family Housing Facility appropriately named R.N. Hogan Manor, a million dollar housing project that is helping low income families of the Figueroa Church.

Several outstanding members have emerged from the Figueroa congregation, including the late Bro. Walter Boykin, Arthur Perkins and Carroll Pitts; John Green, Carl Baccus, Lawrence Murray, Kevin Murray, Vincent Hawkins and others. Truly God has been good.
